Therefore, it has asked the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for financial help. “The government would like to support this with 800,000 Euros as initial aid.” the state secretary of Vorpommern, Patrick Dahlemann, told the German Press Agency on Sunday. “The “Köningslinie” not only is proud tradition and regional identity for the island of Rügen, but also is the link of Vorpommern to the international tourism.” he explains. Before, the station NDR 1 Radio MV had reported.

At the beginning of April, the shipping company Stena Line had announced to close the 110 years old “Köningslinie”. The route had been the shortest connection between Germany and Sweden. According to the shipping company, the reasons for the closure had been the effects of the Corona pandemic and the tense economic situation because of the decreased freight volume. The German Railways had removed the freight transportation going from and to Sweden, to Rostock. Henceforth, Stena Lines is planning to run only two railway ferries between both countries.

According to media reports, the travel time between Germany and Sweden would be shortened even more with the catamaran – from four to two and a half hours. It was planned to only have a touristic passenger transportation between Mukran and South Sweden, possibly Ystad. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the shipping company Weiße Flotte already operates the ferry connection between the islands of Rügen and Hiddensee. The Förde Reederei has in operation high-speed catamarans for up to 777 passengers between Spain and Morocco in the Street of Gibraltar.
